ANDREA CATANIA - “THE PATH OF BONES”
After graduating from the Folkwang University in Germany in 2003 with a degree in Contemporary Dance Performance, Andrea Catania, continued over the last 15 years to explore the body through the practice of different techniques, such as release technique, physical theatre, improvisation and Yoga; her extensive investigation has helped her develop her own technique and a unique stage vocabulary which became “ Path of the bones ”.
“Path of the bones” is a very detailed body-work technique, that consists in developing awareness of all necessary impulses, (and only the necessary ones) that move our skeleton, and have as consequence, our muscular mass moving through space. This very personalized investigation into self-awareness and development has permitted Catania to be able to work with students and professional artists alike, of all body types and skill levels.
Using the organic geometry of bone structure and levers within that structure to move the body with the least muscular effort possible, has been the main focus of her investigation: gravity and centrifugal force have been her main allies in this endeavor.
In this workshop it is of utmost importance that, the parallel work on the body itself, as well as the context in which we move - Body, Object, Space, Reason, Emotion - grow organically and symbiotically.
As a pedagogical complement, Catania teaches scenic improvisation through exercises/games that encourage creativity in a gradual and sensible manner; improvisation is based in (re)structuring imagination and learning ways and methods with which we could create and recreate “spontaneity”, always mindful of the context in which the practice develops.
Some institutions where Catania has imparted workshops are:
-Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica
-University of Costa Rica (workshop for actors).
-CEPRODAC. DF, México
-Festival Oc-ohtic Mérida- México.
-Camping – In, San Luis Potosí- México.
-Teatro Victoria, Tenerife, Spain.
Many professional Companies have also received classes with Catania. Some of them are: National Dance Company, (Costa Rica), Company “El otro ojo” (Mendoza, Argentina), Vincent Dance Theatre, (England), among others.
