Andrea Catania

Dancer, choreographer and professional actress, born in San José, Costa Rica. Presently resides on Galiano Island, BC, Canada. She graduated from the Folkwang University of Arts in Germany in 2003.

At present, she is an active educator and the co-director of the dance and physical theatre company, “Lasafueras.”

Andrea began her professional career with “LosDenmedium”, under the direction of Jimmy Ortiz, with whom she toured extensively nationally and internationally.

In 2006, she validated her German studies with a degree in Contemporary Dance from the National University of Costa Rica.

Internationally, she has worked with the renowned dance company “Sasha Waltz and Guests” under Luc Dunbery’s directive in Berlin.

Among others, she collaborated with Juan Kruz Díaz de Garaio Esnaola,  Stephanie Tiersch/Mouvoir Cie and with the Vincent Dance Theatre, with the latter touring on many occasions across England, Germany and the United States.

As a choreographer, she has worked on commission for various international companies such as: National Dance Company of Costa Rica, the El Barco Conservatory, CEPRODAC in Mexico, ENDCC in Mexico, ASAB in Colombia, National University Costa Rica, “El Otro Ojo” company in Mendoza, Argentina, among others.

In 2003, she co-founded the dance and Physical Theatre Company “Lasafueras” along with musician, director and multi-faceted artist, Alex Catona.

With this company, Catania has furthered her desire for creative experimentation and non-conventionality in the scenic arts.

Together, they have created more than 14 choreographic works and have obtained numerous awards and recognitions.

Some of them include: the National Costa Rican Award as Best Supporting Actress (2013), National Award for Best Group and Best Interpreter in the National Dance Festival of Costa Rica (2016), Best Interpreter in the Festival of Canarias in Spain (2002), four times creditor of the PROARTES National Artist Scholarship of the Youth and Culture Ministry of Costa Rica, and others.

Currently, “Lasafueras” participates in numerous national and international festivals. They also devise their own work, while maintaining full commitment to their intensive educational activities, through various workshop formats for independent groups and/or institutions.
