Andrea Catania

Andrea Catania professional dancer, teacher, choreographer and actress.
She began her career with the group “LosDenmedium” and under the direction of Jimmy Ortiz, he went on numerous national and international tours.
In 2003 she obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Contemporary Dance at the Folkwang Hochschule University in Germany, in 2006 she obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Contemporary Dance at the National University of Costa Rica and in 2023 she obtained a Master's Degree at the University of Castilla y León in Spain, in Contemporary Critical Thought.
Internationally, she has worked with the renowned dance company “Sasha Waltz and Guests”, under the direction of Luc Dunberry in Berlin, with Stephanie Tiersch/mouvoir Cie in Germany, alongside renowned choreographer Garaio Esnaola Juan Kruz, and with the Vincent Dance Theatre company in England, performing numerous performances in England, Germany and the United States.
As a choreographer and artistic director, she has worked for national and international groups, including the National Dance Company of Costa Rica, the El Barco Conservatory, CEPRODAC in Mexico, ENDCC in Mexico, ASAB in Colombia, the National University of Costa Rica, the “El Otro Ojo” Company in Mendoza, Argentina, and the EPDM University in Mazatlán, Mexico, among others.
In 2003, together with the musician, director and multifaceted artist Alex Catona, they founded the company Lasafueras, a personal project with which they have carried out more than 16 choreographic works, obtaining numerous awards and recognitions: National Award for Best Supporting Actress, (2004), National Award for Best Group and Best Performer at the National Dance Festival (2016), Costa Rica, Best Performer at the Canary Islands Festival (Spain), and they have been awarded the PROARTES Scholarship from the Ministry of Culture and Youth five times, among others.
In addition, Catania has dedicated much of her career to teaching, creating her own language and methodology. Over the past 15 years she has taught numerous workshops and seminars at renowned universities and institutions in Costa Rica, Mexico, Canada and Europe.
Currently, Catania, together with Alex Catona, directs Lasafueras, which in addition to being an experimental company is a space for artistic residencies, in San José, Costa Rica. In addition, during 2023 and 2024 they carried out a co-production with the Compañía Nómada de Tenerife, touring numerous different theaters in Latin America and Europe.
Today, Catania participates in numerous national and international festivals, designs her own work and maintains a commitment to her educational activities, through various formats of workshops for groups and/or independent institutions around the world.
